Avoiding moving Scams!
Its been In the News quite a lot recently about people employing the services of so called Man and Van and House Moving Service Providers who have done a runner with the contents of your whole house! We have put a few tips below to hopefully help you stay safe when choosing a service provider these tips will help you choose the right provider for any services you may need to employ not just removals.
Where to look for a good service provider.
There are lots of good service providers around but how do you know the good from the Bad?
Ask Friends and family for a recommendation! Make sure they have had the pleasure of their services its no good relying on a friend who’s seen an advert on Facebook! Anyone can setup a Facebook page and call it anything they like! Pop a few pictures on and pay for a few comments from third party service providers that make the page blow all the bells and whistles and get you believing all is legitimate.
So always Double Check Facebook recommendations.
Even after someone being recommended do a quick search on google and see if they have a Web Site! Most reputable companies do! Once your on their website look for contact info check to see if they have a business address and a landline telephone number. Mobile numbers are great but anyone can get a pay as you go sim card that is untraceable to the actual end user! You can even buy credit for a sim card at your local shop there are no contracts and no details are logged about the purchaser.
So if you cant find a landline number or a business premises it may be wise to steer clear and look for someone else.
Look on line for some reviews and read through them and see what experiences other people have had with your potential choice of mover. Good reviews are rarely left which is a shame as there are so many good companies that could benefit from their customers taking the time to leave a comment. Google+ pages are a good source for genuine reviews as they have an excellent way to weed out any bogus or un natural reviews! The google+ page is setup by the company and they can post information about their business but Reviews are totally independent and cannot be edited or manipulated by the page owner google controls this. There are various other sites for reviews and a google search of the company name should set you on the right track to find them.
So you may get a recommendation that does not quite tick all the above boxes it could be a new:
- Company or one that is New to the Area
- Sole Trader
So in this instance you should be checking out the Name of the person who runs the service google the business owners name and see if it produces any indication that they may not be the kind of person you wish to trust your belongings with. If they turn up on removal day with Any van that is not sign written take a picture of the van clearly showing the registration number! You could even take a few snaps of the chaps loading your items into the van i’m sure they wont mind you doing this if they are genuine.
Ask for proof of insurance!
- Public Liability
- Hire and Reward Insurance on the vans.
- House Removers Insurance.
- Are they covered for Breakdowns
Dont be caught out with Goods In Transit Insurance cover which is entirely different to House Removers Insurance and is mostly used by couriers GIT insurance will not cover a House Removal.
Comparison sites can produce Horror stories its Not un common for these companies to simply Not Show up on Moving day! Or even call you the day before with excuses like
- The Van Has Broken Down!
- You Never confirmed the booking!
- We didn’t book you in! Sort it out with the site you used!
These comparison sites are simply a third party who take a slice of the booking fee they have No power to make the mover show up or even compensate you for any poor workmanship. Some of these sites Do Not check insurances and they are relatively easy to sign up to. The problem with these sites is you cant actually check out the individual person or company until you have made some sort of monetary commitment to the comparison site for them to release the contact details to you I doubt a refund would be easy to get if you decided the company was not what you expected or you thought was un trust worthy.
Before electing to use a comparison site its wise to check out some local businesses first and get a few quotes, after all you get what you pay for this is not saying a higher price commands a better service!
But its safe to say your better off booking someone who:
- Has a business premises.
- Can be contacted via a landline.
- Has sign written vans
- Has a selection of good Reviews.
- Has the Correct insurance.
